Electronic health records have been mandatory in most healthcare settings for over a decade. Clinical decision support alerts fire hundreds of times a day in busy hospitals. AI tools are reading imaging studies, flagging deteriorating patients, and predicting readmissions. And yet the vast majority of clinicians received no formal training in any of it.

This is the digital health skills gap — and it has real consequences for patient care, clinical efficiency, and career progression.

In a 2024 survey by HIMSS, fewer than 30% of clinicians reported feeling confident in their ability to evaluate the quality of health IT systems they use daily. Most EHR training consists of a few hours of click-through orientation — enough to document, not enough to understand why the system works the way it does, what data it is capturing, or how that data gets used downstream.

The result is that clinicians are users of systems they cannot meaningfully interrogate, evaluate, or advocate to improve. When an alert fires and the clinical team doesn't understand its logic, they either override it blindly or follow it blindly — neither of which is good clinical practice.

Health informatics for clinicians is not about learning to code. It is about understanding the landscape well enough to be an informed participant in digital health decisions:

  • Data standards — what FHIR, SNOMED CT, LOINC, and ICD-11 are and why they matter for care continuity
  • Information governance — HIPAA, data quality, and what makes a dataset trustworthy
  • Clinical decision support — how alerts are built, why they have high false-positive rates, and how to give useful feedback to informatics teams
  • AI in clinical settings — how to evaluate AI tools before they touch patients, and what questions to ask about training data and bias

How informatics skills change your clinical role

Clinicians with informatics knowledge are better positioned to use data to improve outcomes. A nurse practitioner who understands EHR data structures can pull population reports to identify patients overdue for chronic disease management. A pharmacist who understands drug-drug interaction alert logic can advise on why alert fatigue is happening and propose better thresholds. A physiotherapist who understands digital care pathways can design better ones.

Advocacy and system design

The clinicians who understand informatics are the ones invited into the room when EHR configurations are being decided. They can translate between what clinical workflow needs and what IT can build. Without that bridge, clinical staff end up with systems designed entirely by IT teams who don't do the work — and the result is the alert fatigue, documentation burden, and workflow friction that characterises so many EHR rollouts.

The career advantage

Informatics credentials are increasingly valued across healthcare roles. The CPHIMS (Certified Professional in Health Informatics and Information Management) and CAHIMS certifications from HIMSS are recognised globally and signal a working knowledge of health IT systems and governance. Many health systems now include informatics competencies in senior clinical role requirements.

Beyond certification, informatics knowledge opens paths into clinical informatics leadership, digital health product roles, health data science, and policy work — all areas with significant demand and, typically, higher compensation than direct clinical roles.
